Before you ride on sanctioned trails in Kawartha Lakes, you must purchase a Kawartha ATV Association (KATVA) permit or possess a valid Haliburton ATV Association (HATVA) permit. Your valid permit will allow you to ride on sanctioned trails within Kawartha Lakes, on select trails in Peterborough County, and on trails in Haliburton, where a HATVA permit is otherwise required. No other trail permits or passes are valid on KATVA trails. Get your permit, ride safe, and have fun.
In this section, you can: learn about where you can ride, find out what types of permits are available, and see where you can purchase a permit. Be sure to review all information on this website before you ride on the trails described here.
Where You Can Ride
With your valid KATVA pass or permit (or valid HATVA permit) you can ride any sanctioned trails in Kawartha Lakes, the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor (VRTC) – Bethany, Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Kinmount, and the Somerville Forest Tract, north of Burnt River. You can also ride the area commonly referred to as the Five Points system, north east of Bobcaygeon.
Please note, with a KATVA permit you can also ride any HATVA sanctioned trails, including trails in the regions of Muskoka, Madawaska and Haliburton County, plus the Algonquin West ATV Club and North Hasting ATV Association areas. If you have questions about any of these riding areas contact the appropriate club or speak to a KATVA board member.
Types of KATVA Permits Available
You can select a short-term permit or an annual permit. Simply determine which permit type best suits your planned ride frequency or personal situation. The KATVA riding season commences May 1 and ends November 30. If you possess any other ATV permit, be sure to read the important note below. Permits are issued only to riders 16 years of age or older, who possess a valid driver’s license.
Important Note: If you possess a valid HATVA permit you may ride on KATVA trails without a KATVA permit. The following trail passes are not valid on Kawartha Lakes’ trails at any time: Trillium Trail Pass, OFATV Pass, EOTA Pass, or ATVOntario PowerPass (or any other trail permits).
These permits are ideal for anyone (one rider) who does not plan to ride KATVA trails on a regular basis, or who does not want to commit to an annual permit.
- Short-term permits entitle you to ride KATVA trails on a defined, limited basis.
- Short-term permits are valid only on day or days specified.
- Short-term permits are not transferable.
- Short-term permits can be purchased more than once by one person in a season.
- Short-term permits do not entitle you to KATVA membership privileges.
These permits are ideal for riders who plan to ride KATVA trails on a regular basis. Annual permits are only issued jointly with KATVA membership.
- Annual permits entitle you access to KATVA trails during ATV riding season(s) and KATVA membership.
- Annual permits are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.
- Annual permits are not transferable.
- Annual permits include KATVA membership.
KATVA (or HATVA) permits are required by the City of Kawartha Lakes to ride on sanctioned trails within the municipality. By-law restrictions do apply. Valid permits are required on trails that access private lands. KATVA permits are valid for riding only during specified dates, between May 1 and November 30.
